The US dairy checkoff has warned farmers that plant-based alternatives and animal advocacy groups are the biggest threats to their business.

At a recent meeting of dairy industry experts in New Orleans, farmers and dairy promoters discussed the impact that vegan substitutes are having on sales.

“Make no mistake, they only have one goal” warned Tom Gallagher, CEO of Dairy Management Inc, “to eliminate all animal agriculture in this country…this is your biggest issue.”

“We’re done taking it” Gallagher promised. “These anti-animal-agriculture people aren’t going to defeat you.”

The dairy industry was further shook yesterday by the announcement that Dean Foods, the biggest cow’s milk producer in the US, has just filed for bankruptcy.
