Reality TV show I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here has permanently stopped ‘bushtucker trials’ that involve eating live insects.
“Producers have taken a look at the trials and decided that no live critters would be eaten in the trials this year,” BBC Radio 1 Newsbeat has revealed.
According to the BBC, an ITV source said: “They have been planning this for some time and actually last year beach worms were the only critters eaten live but this time around they’ve decided to implement the change fully and permanently.”
The show has not, however, banned animals being used in other forms of trials.
Earlier this year TV presenter and vegan advocate Chris Packham slammed the show for ‘abusing animals’ when delivering a speech at the TV Choice Awards
“Our oceans are full of plastic… The Amazon, the lungs of the world is on fire,” Packham said. “As you travel home tonight, you will be breathing toxic air – toxic air that will kill thousands of people in our beloved capital…
“We have to make a change and making changes takes courage. Congratulations to I’m A Celebrity Get Me Out Of Here. A request, can you please think about no longer abusing animals on your program?”
