It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including passing the Koala Protection Act, telling Canada Goose to stop killing coyotes, and making it illegal to eat dogs and cats in Canada.
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Pass the Koala Protection Act
Researchers have been warning people that the koala could go extinct within our lifetime. In the state of Queensland alone, for example, between 2012 and 2016, 5,000 koalas lost their lives due to habitat loss. And the bushfires have taken a terrible toll on the marsupial’s population. The latest estimates say that more than 1,000 koalas burned to death in the fire, and 80% of their habitat has been destroyed. It’s crucial that the government pass the Koala Protection Act (KPA). Sign this petition to tell Australian officials to pass the Koala Protection Act Now.
2. Tell Canada Goose Jackets to Stop Skinning Coyotes!
In order to make their expensive coats, Canada Goose traps, skins, and kills coyotes. It’s a brutal, cruel process! They also use down feathers in their outerwear. An eleven-year-old activist Jasmine tried to speak to Canada Goose about no longer using animals, but they wouldn’t listen. Her mother said: “Jasmine has seen wild animals being nursed back to health. She understands the importance they play in nature, that they have families and homes. She sees an animal capable of fear and suffering, an animal who wants to be free just like she does.” Please sign this petition to tell Dani Reiss, CEO and President of Canada Goose to immediately stop skinning coyotes for their jackets.
3. Ask Japan to Crack Down on Illegal Fishing
Marine species are illegally caught then sent to Japan, where unlawful fishing and importing isn’t punished. Their processing plants do not require certification of sourcing for the fish they receive. Since the legality of fishing depends on where they do it, it’s impossible to tell simply by evaluating the species of seafood at a processing plant. Without requiring a regulated form of sourcing documentation, it’s clear why criminal fishing operations choose Japan as their destination. The summer Olympics are going to be in Tokyo in 2020, making it the perfect time to demand that Japan pass actual legislation to close the loophole of illegal fishing in their system. Sign this petition to urge them to crack down on it!
4. Protect Mountain Lions from Cattle Ranchers That Want to Kill Them
In 1972, the San Francisco Bay Area’s public voted to establish the Midpeninsula Regional Open Space District (Midpen), 65,000 acres of land set aside in a conservation effort and funded by income taxes. This protects nature and wildlife, including the mountain lion. Now, a few private ranchers who lease parts of this preserve think they should have the right to kill mountain lions who are just trying to survive. Sign this petition now and urge Midpen to throw out the proposed amendment to authorize the senseless killing of these wild animals!
5. Bring Man Who Stomped Fox to Death to Justice!
A horrible video garnered outrage when a Spanish hunter was seen in it coming upon an injured fox. He hurled it into the air and then proceeded to bludgeon it with his gun and stomp on the poor fox until it died. The death was cruel, heartless and unnecessary. Even the Royal Spanish Hunting Federation (RFEC) is asking for this man to be punished. Sign this petition and tell Spain’s nature protection agency (SEPRONA) to take this crime seriously, find the perpetrator and bring him to justice.
6. Make It Illegal To Eat Dogs And Cats In Canada
It is currently legal to consume dog and cat meat in Canada. If properly sourced or killed and gutted in front of federal inspectors, a restaurant could substitute dog or cat meat without facing any criminal charges or health violations. There are also no legal consequences if a pet owner kills and eats their dog or cat. Sign this petition to urge the Government of Canada to make it a federal offense to eat dog and cat meat.
7. Shut Down Zoo Where Visitors Were Allowed to Throw Bricks at Animals!
Last year, the Fuzhou Zoo in Fujian drew outrage from people around the world when a kangaroo died after visitors threw bricks at her. The zoo knew that visitors were prone to throwing bricks at the kangaroos because they wanted to make them hop. This poor kangaroo’s foot was severely injured and she died from the internal injuries caused by the attack. Then another kangaroo was injured just weeks later. The zoo took no measures to protect the animals from tragedies like this. Sign this petition to ask the city of Fuzhou to shut down the zoo!
8. Ban the Captivity of Marine Mammals in Dalian, China
Last year in Sun Asia Ocean World in Dalian, China, an animal “trainer” was caught on video putting lipstick on a beluga whale to make her “prettier” for paying visitors. This is completely unnatural and unsafe for the whale. The park publicly apologized and the trainer resigned, but the whales don’t belong in captivity to begin with. In the wild they can live up to 60 years old, but in captivity only live until around 20-25 years old. The incident proves that they don’t care about the safety or wellbeing of the animal — it’s about profit. Sign this petition to ask the city of Dalian to ban the captivity of marine mammals.
9. Stop the Violent Slaughter of Donkeys
Ejiao is a traditional Chinese medicine, and 5 million donkeys a year are slaughtered to fulfill the demand for the gelatin used to make it. China’s donkey population has dwindled from 11 million in 1992 to just 2.6 million today. The decline in the domestic population has forced the ejiao industry to begin aggressively sourcing donkeys from the rest of the world. Donkeys are dragged by their ears and tails, even old, young, pregnant, and injured donkeys are treated brutally. Sign this petition to ask the Chinese government to make this cruel industry illegal!
10. Ban All Traveling Animal Acts in the U.S.
This year, the Traveling Exotic Animal and Public Safety Act (TEAPSA, HR 2863-S2121) was re-introduced. It would finally end the suffering of all animals forced to endure the pain and suffering of circus and traveling acts for human entertainment. Sign this petition if you support this act!
