It’s horrible to hear about animal abuse cases or read the ways humans are endangering many species. Fortunately, there are things we can do to speak for them. One of the ways we can help and lend our voices to good causes is by signing petitions. Such petitions are sent to people in powerful positions that can make a change, especially when they see just how many people stand behind the cause. We can demand change, justice, and stop tragedies by speaking up and doing our part.
There are horrifying things happening around the world every week like extinction, hunting, exploitation, and cruelty. If you are looking for a way to help animals, here are 10 petitions you should sign this week, including protecting endangered species, asking department stores to stop selling fur, and protecting lemurs and Madagascar’s forests.
We want to thank you for being the change you wish to see in the world and giving a voice to the voiceless.
1. Demand an End to London Zoo’s Breeding Program After Tigress is Killed
Last year, the London Zoo attempted to breed two tigers. However, once they were introduced, the only tension they shared was based on aggression and anger, which led to the death of Melati, the 10-year-old tigress who lived at the zoo for years before the encounter. Melati was killed by seven-year-old tiger Asim, who was brought to the zoo from Denmark because of the breeding program. When animals are placed in captivity, they are stripped of their freedom and forced to adjust to an artificially designed habitat that isn’t suitable for them like the environments they are found in. While the intent of the breeding program may have been to aid in conservation efforts, the stress of their captivity may be the most significant reason to blame for this vicious mauling. Whether or not that is exactly the case here or not, what remains factual is that captive breeding hasn’t proven to be the answer in helping endangered species. Sign this petition to make sure the zoo hears your voice demanding justice for Melati.
2. Protect the One Million Endangered Species at Risk of Extinction
One million species are on the verge of extinction. This isn’t a natural occurrence or an invisible hand that’s pushing the world’s wildlife to the edge. The cause of the coming mass extinction is in plain sight. It is us. Care2 is launching a campaign to save endangered species from extinction, and we need your help. When you sign this petition, you will become a Fantastic Beast Guardian. Your mission will be simple — help spread the word about some of the world’s most endangered animals and support the work of groups dedicated to saving them.
3. Stop British developers From Obtaining Licenses to Kill Protected Nesting Birds
Natural England and Natural Resources Wales have given the go-ahead for nesting birds such as robins, starlings, blackbirds and bullfinches to be shot, in spite of these birds being protected by law. They argue that it is being done because they are a “threat to public health and air safety,” but it is obvious that it’s merely because nesting birds slow down building operations. Please prevent the issuing of these licenses. Sign this petition to speak up for the protected birds!
4. Ask Department Stores to Stop Selling Fur
From raccoons to foxes, minks to chinchillas, these animals spend their entire lives stuffed in small cages, with zero human affection, often with open wounds and other maladies that cause them to suffer. That is until the fur farmer decides their day has come, and they are slaughtered. Recently Macy’s and Bloomingdale’s announced that they’d be banning the sale of fur, but other iconic department stores like Nordstrom and Barney’s continue to sell these cruel products. Sign this petition asking them to stop selling all fur products!
5. Justice for Horse Repeatedly Kicked in the Head by Carriage Driver

A video of a carriage driver in Melbourne, Australia kicking his horse has gone viral. The horse collapsed and the driver is seen kicking the horse and telling the woman filming to “piss off.” The carriage horse had collapsed while still attached and could not stand. The driver was aggressive to the animal and used multiple expletives. Carriage horses are often mistreated and forced to work in too hot or other terrible conditions. Carriage horses are made to pull significant loads just for tourism. Horses are confined to the carriage, wearing blinders, excessive equipment and a metal bit. Sign the petition and demand that the driver is investigated for animal cruelty and that the city of Melbourne ban horse-drawn carriages for good!
6. Justice for Disabled Dog Cruelly Abandoned by his Family Twice

Tintin is a sweet, lovable dog who only has three legs and a disability in his remaining front leg. He walks with a limp and because of his special needs, he requires extra love and care. When his family decided they couldn’t give him this, they were extremely cruel to him. Footage was released that shows a woman driving somewhere before stopping and letting her dogs out the car. She guides one of the dogs back in before closing the door and aggressively shoving Tintin away. He falls on his face and limps behind the car as it drives away, leaving him there all alone. The dog was returned to them by someone and later that same day, the woman’s husband did the same to him at another location — dropping him off and leaving him all alone. Sign this petition urging the authorities in the Brazilian city of Sao Leopoldo to find the people responsible and charge them with animal cruelty!
7. Save Billy the Elephant from L.A. Zoo
Billy the elephant has been stuck in LA zoo ever since he was four years old and as Cher explains: “He is in pain both physically and psychologically. He spends 80% of his time rocking back and forth. This behavior is called stereotypic behavior and is widely known to be a sign of distress. It is never seen in wild elephants.” She also stated: “Billy is standing on hard, packed dirt in a small, sterile environment. In the wild, he would be walking hundreds of miles a day on soft earth. In the zoo, Billy can’t choose what he eats. At a sanctuary he will have choices.” PAWS is ready to receive Billy right now. Join celebrities Cher and Lily Tomlin in standing up for Billy by signing this petition now!
8. Protect Madagascar’s Rainforests From Deforestation
The journal Nature Climate Change has found that by 2070 all of Madagascar’s rainforest will be gone due to deforestation and climate change. The thousands of plants, mammals, reptiles and other animals will be impacted. 80-90% of the species in Madagascar only exist in those areas. The area is considered a “biodiversity hotspot.” Environmentalists are concerned about long term effects of greenhouse gas emissions and deforestation in the health of the area. Lemurs, particularly, are in danger of the species who live there because Madagascar has 101 species of lemurs, 95% are endangered. Sign this petition asking the government of Madagascar to take urgent action to save the rainforests from destruction.
9. Stop More Than 10,000 Camels From Being Killed in Australia
South Australia is currently experiencing a drought. Camels — who need water to survive — have been frantically searching for water, even barging into communities. Unfortunately, it’s been decided that the best way to deal with this issue is to cull 10,000 camels. Aside from the camels barging into communities and searching for taps and tanks to drink from, they are also being blamed for “greenhouse gas emissions, as they emit methane equivalent to one ton of carbon dioxide per year.” Yet, Australia contributes very much to greenhouse gas emissions because of human activity. The country’s carbon emissions are among the highest per capita in the world. They also have a big coal business that contributes greatly to climate change. Yet camels are unfortunately being treated as scapegoats and being killed when the government could certainly find a different way of handling the situation. Sign this petition to speak up against Australia’s camel cull!
10. Ban Rodeos in New Zealand
Currently, it’s summertime in New Zealand and it’s unfortunately, the time of year when rodeo events are held. In these rodeos, there is so much abuse and torture. One of the most prominent and heartbreaking events is the calf roping or ‘rope and tie,’ in which “calves as young as three months old are chased at high speed, dragged to a sudden stop with a choking rope around the neck and thrown to the ground. This is a horrific experience causing stress, fear and pain,” as explained by SAFE. Another event in these cruel rodeos is calf riding “where these baby animals are ridden by children. An irritating flank strap, which makes them buck, is wrenched tight around their hindquarters before they are forced into the ring.” Sign this petition calling for a complete ban on rodeos in New Zealand!
