To celebrate its 75th birthday, The Vegan Society has launched a new campaign — Vegan and Thriving.

“We want to ensure that people know that you can be healthy and thrive on a vegan diet – despite popular misconceptions” the society explained.

The animal-friendly organization was formed in London in 1944 with just 25 members. Statistics show that there are currently more than 600,000 people in the UK who do not consume any animal products — a number which has quadrupled over the last five years.

“It’s incredible that the word ‘vegan’ didn’t even exist until 75 years ago, but can now be seen on menus and products around the world” said George Gill, the current CEO of the society.

Co-founder of the society, Donald Watson lived to see his 95th birthday, a fact that is intertwined with the new campaign.

“Vegan and Thriving will help you to be healthy…with a host of nutritionally balanced recipes and support on all aspects of plant-based nutrition” states the organization on its website.

“We hope the campaign will allay any fears that people may have about the healthfulness of a plant-based diet” said Louise Davies, Head of Campaigns, Policy and Research at the society.

“Veganism can be good for your health in a holistic way. More importantly than how you look, it can positively affect how you feel physically and mentally” said Senior Communications and Campaigns Officer Elena Orde.

“To us, ‘thriving’ encapsulates this feeling” she added.
